Mrs Brown’s Boys Star Breaks Silence on Pay Row Controversy — “Don’t Believe Everything You Read”

For years, Mrs Brown’s Boys has been one of the UK and Ireland’s most beloved sitcoms — a chaotic, heartwarming, laugh-out-loud family comedy with a cast that feels more like real relatives than actors.
But away from the jokes and the roaring studio audiences, the show has been shadowed by persistent rumours of backstage tensions, pay disputes, and claims of favouritism.

Now, one of its longest-standing and most-loved cast members, Eilish O’Carroll, has stepped forward to set the record straight.

Eilish O’Carroll Opens Up: “It’s Not What People Think”

Eilish, who plays the iconic Winnie McGoogan — Agnes Brown’s clueless yet adorable best friend — has spoken candidly about the controversy surrounding the show’s alleged pay disputes.

Her message?
👉 Don’t believe everything you read in the papers.

Speaking to Dublin Live, the 67-year-old actress said she doesn’t recognise the negative picture some news outlets have painted of the show or its cast relationships.

“I really and truly don’t know if it’s just paper talk or whether somebody is trying to make a name for themselves.”

Her comments come after former cast member Damien McKiernan, who played Rory Brown, left the show amid rumours of unfair treatment and pay inequality.

At the same time, actor Gary Hollywood, known for his role as Dino Doyle, filed a lawsuit claiming he was paid less than his colleagues for the spin-off series All Round to Mrs Brown’s. He also alleged he was excluded from a Christmas special after asking questions about pay — though he ultimately dropped the lawsuit this week.

“People Become Envious” — The Reality Behind the Scenes

Eilish says much of the drama portrayed in the media simply doesn’t reflect the day-to-day reality of working on the show.

In fact, she suggests the problem may stem not from mistreatment, but from misunderstandings about how sitcoms are structured.

She explained:

“Winnie, Grandad and Agnes are always in every episode — that’s the formula. You can have people come and go, but the three will always be there.”

In other words, some roles are naturally central to the show, while others appear more flexibly depending on the storyline.

She added that this can lead to frustration among cast members who expect equal screen time or guaranteed appearances — something no sitcom can realistically promise.

Eilish even hinted that jealousy sometimes plays a part:

“I think sometimes people can become envious… but it’s always been my mantra that if you compare yourself to someone else, you’ll never be happy.”

Not a Toxic Set — But a Family With Challenges

Despite the rumours, Eilish insists that the show remains a close-knit group with deep bonds formed over decades of working and touring together.

She describes the cast and crew as “family,” and says she rarely reads — or believes — the negativity printed about them.

“Don’t believe what you read in the papers. I rarely read the positive or negative things they say.”

For her, the only thing that matters is whether she is happy with her own work, her role, and her experience — not what others claim is happening behind the scenes.

A Reminder of What Made the Show Great

While the controversies have drawn headlines, Eilish’s words serve as a reminder of the real magic behind the sitcom:

✨ A group of actors who grew together
✨ A family whose real-life bonds shaped their on-screen chemistry
✨ A show that broke ratings records, conquered the stage, and brought joy to millions
✨ And a cast that remains dedicated to making people laugh — no matter what’s swirling in the press

With festive specials and major projects always in the works, it’s clear that Mrs Brown’s Boys remains as resilient as ever.

And if Eilish’s comments are anything to go by, the truth behind the show is far less dramatic — and far more heartwarming — than the headlines would have fans believe.
